Reddit Glossary for Brands
The Reddit terms brands run into most, each with a one-line definition and one thing to watch for. Reddit’s own help pages and each community’s rules take precedence.
Reddit basics
- Subreddit
A topic-based community on Reddit, written r/name. Each one has its own moderators and rules.
Watch for: Read the rules before posting; two communities on the same topic can have very different rules.

- Karma
An account score shaped by upvotes and downvotes on its posts and comments, split into post karma and comment karma; it does not map one-to-one to vote counts.
Watch for: Many communities require a minimum karma or account age, so promotional posts from new accounts are often filtered or removed.

- Upvote / Downvote
Votes on posts and comments that affect how content is ranked.
Watch for: Never organize voting; Reddit treats it as vote manipulation.

- OP (Original Poster)
The person who started a thread; in the comments it also means that person.
Watch for: When a brand account is the OP, reply to comments quickly and specifically.
- Flair
A label a community puts on posts or users, such as "Question" or "Review", or one that marks who someone is.
Watch for: Some communities require post flair; an official brand account can ask the moderators for flair that identifies it.

- Moderator
A volunteer who runs a community: enforces its rules, removes content and bans accounts.
Watch for: If you want to run something in a community, message the moderators first instead of just posting.
- AutoModerator
A rules bot set up by moderators that removes or replies to content based on keywords, account conditions and similar checks.
Watch for: When a post vanishes right after you submit it, an automatic rule or another filter may be the reason, not necessarily a human.
- AMA (Ask Me Anything)
A thread where a person or team answers questions from users in public.
Watch for: Agree the time and rules with the moderators before a brand AMA.

- Megathread
A pinned thread the moderators open to collect discussion on one topic.
Watch for: Launch and promotion posts are often only allowed inside a megathread.
- Crosspost
Sharing a post from one community into another.
Watch for: Crossposting the same content to many communities easily reads as spam.
- Self-promotion
Posting content that promotes your own product, site or account.
Watch for: Most communities limit self-promotion; follow each community’s own rules.

- Shadowban
A restriction where an account can see its own content but other people cannot.
Watch for: If an account’s posts get no engagement for a long time, check while logged out whether they are visible. One invisible post alone does not mean the account is shadowbanned; community filtering or removal may be the cause.
- Removed / Deleted
Removed means a moderator or the system took the content down; deleted means the author did.
Watch for: They mean different things when you review data, so do not treat both as negative signals.

- Lurker
Someone who reads but does not post or comment.
Watch for: Little engagement does not mean nobody read it.
- Throwaway
An account created briefly to post anonymously.
Watch for: Praising your brand from throwaway accounts does far more damage once it is spotted.
Reddit products
- Reddit Ads
Reddit’s ad platform, with targeting by community and interest.
Watch for: Ads and organic posts follow different rules: ads follow the ad policy, organic posts follow each community’s rules.

- Reddit Pro

Watch for: It can be used alongside third-party data tools.

- Reddit Answers
Reddit’s AI question-answering feature, which builds answers from discussions on Reddit.
Watch for: Reddit content is also widely cited by AI search tools, so real community discussions shape the answers AI gives.

CyberRedd data terms
- Data cutoff
The time of the newest content in a dataset; anything later is not in it.
Watch for: Check the data cutoff at the top of a report before reading its figures.
Related: Data reports
- Archived snapshot
A copy of the data taken at one point in time, not live data.
Watch for: The same metric can differ between snapshots.
Related: Data reports
- Uncalibrated
Results from automatic counting or labelling that have not been checked against human-reviewed samples.
Watch for: Uncalibrated data describes discussion; it is not a conclusion.

- Alias disambiguation
Deciding whether a word in context really refers to a brand, for example whether "Nothing" is the brand or the ordinary word.
Watch for: Without it, brands named after common words get overcounted.

- surge_score
A score for how much a community’s discussion this week rose against the previous 4 weeks: (p_0 − μ) / σ.
Watch for: When the current week is incomplete the score can be off, so read it with the coverage ratio.

- KOC accounts
Real user accounts with a long posting history and high karma in specific communities, matched with brands for individual collaborations.
